There are too many things to mention that I am not good at, yet. Here are just some; building a website that speaks to my ideal customer, social media marketing, writing blog posts, being the most mindful mother I can possibly be and the list goes on. But using the word "yet" while learning and growing make me feel much better about all the pieces of the puzzle that I still have to figure out. This concept stuck in my mind after learning about the growth mindset that Carol Dweck, a world-renowned Standford University psychologist, coined in her book called "Mindset: The New Psychology of Success (2007)". The book highlights the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. With a fixed mindset, people believe their talent or intelligence are fixed traits. They live their lives proving that to themselves over and over. People with a fixed mindset believe that talent and intelligence create success, not necessarily effort or learning. With a growth mindset, people believe that their basic abilities can be developed through hard work and dedication. Failing, learning, changing and working hard is what people with a growth mindset do. Noteworthy is that a growth mindset CAN be taught and that it increases motivation and productivity. The caveat is that one has to get very comfortable with failing and making mistakes, viewing it as a natural part of the learning process. For me that is the trickiest part to learn because I certainly did not grow up in a culture where failing was seen as a crucial part of learning. So now, well into middle age, I am learning how to cultivate a growth mindset in myself and our home. I often have to remind myself of this when I get discouraged or frustrated with how many things I still have to learn, how many steps there still are to take, how many things I still need to get better at. I'm sure you can understand then how good it felt when LittleMissG, my nine year old daughter, was working on a challenging little project of hers, walking in and out the art room, her footsteps becoming quicker and quicker, frustration building. Suddenly she stopped and frustratedly said, "I am not getting it right!!........ YET!" Followed by a smile and a very determined look on her face. Watch this TEDex talk where Carol Dweck talks about the POWER OF YET. Leave a comment and let me know if you have had success with applying the power of yet in your life.
