Luminarium
THE STORY IN THE LAYERS
BEHIND THE TITLE OF " Luminarium"
Luminarium means light in Late Latin
|
WORDS
The music playing in the background was Miles Davis, Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars), so those words were in the first layers.
Next came an excerpt from the poem "Grammar" by Tony Hoogland;
When she walks into the room,
everybody turns:
some kind of light is coming from her head.
Even the geraniums look curious....
We're all attracted to the perfume
of fermenting joy.
we've all tried to start a fire,
and one day maybe it will blaze up on its own.
In the meantime, she is the one today among us
most able to bear the idea of her own beauty,
and when we see it, what we do is natural:
we take our burned hands
out of our pockets,
and clap.

The poem was painted into each petal of the peonies. Painting the same words over and over is one of the aspects of painting that I enjoy the most, I go to a different world, a very peaceful one, while doing it.
IMAGES
Peonies and hummingbirds - those were the inspirations. In nature though, a peonie is not a flower that a hummingbird would naturally be drawn to.
The hummingbird is a symbol of insight, wisdom and resilience. Also flexibility, lightheartedness and joy.
Peonies are symbols of romance, prosperity, compassion and bashfulness.

THEME
A woman being celebrated and acknowledged for knowing her own value.
