LAST JOB TITLE with a regular pay cheque: Clinical Auditor at a large tertiary hospital. It was the best career fit and the most satisfying job I’ve ever had.
QUALFICATIONS & PREVIOUS JOBS: I am qualified as a clinical dietitian (B.Sc in Dietetics with Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Nutrition) with 18 years of experience in the field. I’ve also worked as a pharmaceutical company representative, great perks, awful job selling something you don't believe in. Taught English as a second language, even though English is my own second language.
BEING A MOTHER: I am privileged to be a mother to an eight year old girl. When she started school I made the tough decision to quit my job and give up a very good income to spend more time with her. She is my greatest teacher. Being the best mother I can be means I am learning every day how to be more mindful and present.
WHY I NEVER PAINTED BEFORE I TURNED 40: I suppose deep down I’ve always wanted to paint but I never paid any attention to it. I painted all the walls of the homes I’ve ever lived in and did a few paintings with wall paint, but never felt compelled to take it up as a hobby. I knew I did not want my amateur paintings of fruit bowls and horses around the house as a result of learning to paint.
WHY I STARTED PAINTING: It was only when I went through a difficult personal time that I took the plunge into process art. It opened my eyes to a new way of creating, literally out of nothing. It was liberating. Then I tried intuitive painting and it felt like complete freedom to play and create from an inspired place.
MY DAUGHTER SOMETIMES PAINTS THE FIRST LAYER: She has great fun experimenting with colours and all sorts of techniques. I love watching her paint.
FAVOURITE PAST TIME: Day dreaming. I’m a dreamer, always have been, always will be. I am inspired by anyone that makes the world a better place, in small and big ways. But dreams are cheap if you don't do anything to make it happen. I'm beginnning to learn making them come true takes massive action, growth and courage. I’m learning and growing in ways that are quite exhilarating and often painful.
CURRENT OBSESSIONS: Learning about emotional intelligence, mindfulness, parenting, the intersections between neuro- and behavioural science, the trait of HSP (highly sensitive people) and applying it in my own life.
A FEW THINGS I LOVE: Illustrated children’s books, philosophy, poetry, SILENCE, silver jewellery, beads, African textiles, doodling, women’s magazines, travelling.
FAVOURITE PLACES: Home. Next to the ocean. Foot of Table Mountain. African bushveld.
